Using Reader X with Protected Mode disabled is in fact less secure than using Reader 9.x. It is Adobe’s current policy that when they release a patch for Reader 9.x, they will delay the release of the same patch for Reader X. They are assuming that Protected Mode is enabled and will prevent successful exploit of the vulnerability. This leaves users of Reader X with Protected Mode disabled exposed until the next quarterly update. There will be no out-of-band patches released for Reader X.
Both Reader’s Protected Mode and Acrobat’s Protected View as of 10.1 will support Citrix and Windows Terminal Server (June 2011).
